About four years ago some of my Barbie Repaints travelled to Poland to visit Kamelia. They came back home last month, and they are not only fluent in Polish now but they brought some lovely things back home with them. Kamelia made a jeans jacket in Raccoon size as well as a flower print hooded sweater for me, and she gifted me with some super thin wool and a lot of fabric. As you might know, Kamelia closed her Etsy shop a while ago. It’s such a pity, her clothes are wonderfully made.

Bell grabbed the jeans jacket before any of the other girls could claim it, and she looks great in it. I used some of the multicolor wool Kamelia gave me to knit a shawl and a hat for her. The colors are a great match for her pink wig. Look at those tiny buttons! Bell loves this jacket, and so do I. Thank you so much!

Judith shows off the flower print hoodie. It has real pockets at the front.

Solveig likes her new shawl, this wool was also a gift from Kamelia. I don’t know if it’s mohair, it certainly has the look and feel of it.

Thanks again for all the lovely stuff! Some of the fabric will be used next, I look forward to work with it.

Academic look in brown

Have you ever heard of the fashion style “Dark Academia” or “Light Academia”? I am not sure if this outfit would actually fit all the criteria for this style, but it surely does look academic. I am a fan of the Berlin based fashion label femkit, and I might make some clothes inspired by them. But I think Solveig’s hair doesn’t look right with the vintage element of these outfits, so I might make them for another girl.

This one however is very much Solveig. I hope you like it. The vest closes in the back, just in case you were wondering.

With all the excitement about the new dolls I forgot : I have made a lot of pencil skirts and dresses for Solveig – and there are still more to come. Solveig loves bold patterns and strong colors.

She gets to wear all the fabric patterns I wouldn’t usually consider for this doll size. But there’s something so strong and vibrant about this girl that they don’t “drown” her.

Lets start with something less colorful, a two-piece top and a matching skirt.

The next outfit is a dark violet top and a striped pencil skirt.

Her denim dress closes in the back and comes with a belt.

I used the dress pattern for a couple of dresses.

Bright red and bold flowers, or 70ties pattern skirt and a green top?

I made this before she became Solveig. I like the dress, but Solveig isn’t really the tiny flowers kind of woman, isn’t she? The green top with the spots is another top I made before I knew her, and I am not quite sure about that either. What do you think?

Doll yoga: Raccoon slim bodies compared

My Raccoon Nina on the Naturally Posed body arrived last week.

I promised doll Yoga, and after I made some Yoga outfits for the girls they are ready for some exercise. For those who actually practice Yoga: I am well aware these are not proper poses, but it was fun to try.

Raccoon body comparison

Meet the contestants: Bell (Lara) on the original “Slim body” (OldSlim), Solveig (Rose) on the “New Slim body” (NewSlim) and Nina (she doesn’t have a name yet) on the “Naturally Posed slim body” (NaPoSlim). I will use abbreviations for this post, since the names for the bodies as they are called on the Raccoondoll website are rather long. The body review for the NewSlim body (released in 21) can be found here. Since I started writing this post I received Cindy on the Naturally Posed Glamorous body (NaPoGlam) as well, and everything I write about the NaPoSlim holds true for the glamorous version as well, it’s just a bit curvier.

The name for the Naturally Posed body (release 2023) is an accurate name for this new body. While the NewSlim already came with some posing improvements, this new body offers a completely different posing experience. Compared to the NaPoSlim the older bodies and other doll bodies appear stiff. The NaPoSlim does not only hold poses much better, it allows the limbs to move and behave in a more natural way. Slightly angled elbows, different knee joints and other changes make it possible to pose this body in new ways. It just looks more relaxed and natural, and the body holds those poses without effort.

And the NaPoSlim body holds the arm and hand poses close to the body without tricks and support. I wrote in my boxopening post that I am not a fan of the way the elbow and knee joints look. But once you have learnt what the limbs can do the aesthetics are negligible.

As you can see in the picture below, the NaPoSlim looks more natural even in a standing position. The arms look less stiff, and the legs can do relaxed looking contrapposto poses easily. The NewSlim body can do some of those as well, but the weak point of that body are definitively the ankle joints. The feet tend to move in unwanted ways and without shoes the joints are not really stable.

NaPoSlim: Relaxed and natural looking

All three bodies can do the sitting pose in the following pictures. The NaPoSlim body needs a bit more turning and trying for the leg position, the simple leg-forward needs a bit of a pull out of the hip socket first. The arms can do straight and angled, and the body holds the pose very easily. The other two bodies needed a bit more balancing time. You can see that the NaPoSlim shoulder-width and arm joints allow the arms to go up around the head more naturally.

Nina’s left knee can lay flat on the ground, I just didn’t turn the mobility joints far enough. Still learning to pose the body.

All three bodies can do this as well. The OldSlim body breast part snaps into a sideways angle that doesn’t look very elegant and creates a dent in the silhouette. The hands don’t hold a head-touching position. The NewSlim body takes some balancing to stand in this pose. Her ankles are weak. The hands can touch the head. The NaPoSlim torso part moves most easily, and the arms touch legs and head willingly. Again, the NaPoSlim body looks most natural in this pose.

The hands are a problem for this pose, so the NaPoSlim with the flat hands has an advantage here. She can even move one leg up. The NewSlim feet and hands are not made for this, so I had some problems keeping them in that position. OldSlim as well as NewSlim look a bit stiff in the arms and shoulders.

The NaPoSlim knee joints might not be the prettiest, but they allow the legs to fold in a way the other legs can’t. The head can move back nicely as well, but that might change once she wears a wig.

Again, all three bodies can do this, but the hands and arms of the NaPoSlim stay in position, while the OldSlim and NewSlim arms can’t touch the head. The knee joints look definitively odd though. The OldSlim and NewSlim knees are just looking a bit prettier in certain poses.

It took some time to get the OldSlim into this position without her falling sideways, but she can do it. Her’s as well as the NewSlim body arms didn’t want to stay on the tigh, though. In this position the NaPoSlim needs a bit more encouragement to place the legs a bit apart, the knee joints make the legs want to fold automatically. Again, turning the mobility joints a bit more might have helped. But none of the other bodies could do the pose in the last picture, placing the hand on the tigh and keeping it there.

Now this is a pose only the NaPoSlim can do. Not that there would be much need to ever put a doll into that position. The OldSlim and NewSlim body needed one leg on the ground to keep them stable, they can’t “stand” on their knees. And they needed a lot of balancing to even hold the pose long enough to take the pictures. The NewSlim body wouldn’t stand with a torso bent back, and her arms didn’t want to stay straight either. The NaPoSlim can hold this forever. You could store her like that. Sorry for the bad light, by the way.

This clearly weren’t poses you would chose to show off clothes (well, except Yoga outfits), but I thought it would be fun to compare the different bodies in this way. As far as natural posing for every day use is concerned, the new NaPoSlim body is clearly the winner. Even in unspectacular poses it takes and holds the pose in a more relaxed looking way, and some of the poses I need for showing off clothes very often are so easy! Like putting a hand on a thigh. Last but not least a couple of “every day use” poses. If you own one of the older bodies you will know that these poses are not easy to achieve with other doll bodies.

I will write another post about the hands, feet, clothing and shoes and show the NaPoSlim and NaPoGlam side by side, but I didn’t want to make this post even longer. I hope you found this helpful and fun 🙂

How would you picture a Professor of Astrophysics and Marine Geophysics? A grey-haired guy with glasses maybe?

Whatever people might have expected, most are surprised when they meet Dr. S. E. Iversen for the first time. They got the hair color right, though.

The professor’s full name is Solveig Eiger Iversen. That doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue easily, even if people know how to pronounce Solveig (SOHL-vay, with a silent G). Her second name usually causes even more raised eyebrows and questions. Eiger? Like the mountain? Exactly…

Solveig’s father was an enthusiastic mountaineer in his youth. Climbing the Eiger North Wall was a very challenging- if not life threatening- undertaking, and he swore he’d call his firstborn “Eiger” if he would survive the ascent. He did survive – and his firstborn was a girl. Her mother insisted on Solveig as a first name and her father wanted to stick to his word. Solveig takes her second name in good humour. She always says she’s glad her Dad didn’t climb Trollsteineggi, a mountain close to his hometown in Norway. Solveig usually tells the story to break the ice when she gives a seminar.

Solveig is a guest lecturer at university, but most of her time she works in research. When people outside scientific circles ask her what she does for a living, she usually tells them “Something like climate change research”. The female gender ratio in astrophysics is just about 15-20%, and even in 2023 Solveig is faced with questions why on earth a woman would be interested in physics. She’s a bit tired of explaining herself, so she just keeps it simple.

It’s not even a lie, but the climate change aspect is just a small fraction of her research. The research group is part of an international, multidisciplinary project to investigate celestial hydrospheres amongst many other things. And of course Solveig knows from experience that talking about galactic habitable zones, exoplanets and hydrospheres, water movement or cryosphere physics has the same effect on people as if she’d suddenly start to yodel.

She knows that her interest in science seems exotic to a lot of people, but for her it was a natural developmet. Solveig often jokes that she became a physicist because nobody told her she couldn’t. Even as a kid she liked structures, logic and numbers, and she was encouraged to follow her interests.

Her father was not only a climber, he was also a geographer. Her mom – enthusiastic birdwatcher and herbalist – never left the house without her binoculars. Solveig and her younger brother Haldor grew up surrounded by scientific journals, instruments, rock samples and minerals. And of course lots of books. Solveig accompanied her father on many sample collecting trips. Her favorite find was a meteorite, and she loved to read science fiction stories. Her mom taught her the constellations, the whole family shares the interest in astronomy and a general joy of discovery. They went to visit an astronomical observatory for her eleventh birthday and spent the night watching stars. Just like her parents Solveig wanted to know what was out there – and how everything works. And just like the rest of her family she is by no means a fachidiot, she is interested in many things.

And while her family doesn’t think her chosen career is in any way particular, they sometimes wonder why on earth she likes those loud 70s patterns so much. Solveig’s brother always complains that her wallpaper gives him a headache. She likes vibrant colors and geometric patterns on her walls just as much as she likes to wear them. Maybe she prefers them because she went grey in her early twenties. Which came as a shock, but she soon realized that her grey hair worked to her advantage. She looked older and was taken more seriously. Solveig has a thing for pencil skirts and sheath dresses, and this preference adds to the mature look. At least at work, leisurewear is a completely different thing.

When her time and the location allows it she likes to join her brother Haldor when he’s filming. Haldor is a biologist and independant wildlife filmmaker. Scouting and tracking, setting up camp, cooking, organizing stuff…there are a lot of things to do and she enjoys helping him. Solveig and Haldor used to do things like that when they went on trips with their father, and they make a good team. There is also a lot of silent watching and waiting, and for both of them it’s almost meditative, quiet sibling bonding time. Her brother has been working with the same camera assistant and sound guy for years, they are like family.

Since most of her working day is spent at a computer she wants to be outdoors as much as she can. She loves kayaking, swimming and hiking. Sore muscles, dirty clothes, itching insect bites, sunburn and lots of exercise – that’s Solveig’s idea of a weekend well spent.

Raccoon Rose arrived today- and a lovely surprise gift

I received my Raccoon Rose today. She is every bit as lovely as I could wish her to be. I ordered her in normal skin on the “New Slim body” I love this body, the only thing I am not a fan of are the feet, or more precisely that they turn backwards very easily. But that’s no biggie, really. I love the improvements and the hands in particular, they are so expressive.

Her face is elegant and almost a bit androgynous, and like all Raccoon dolls she has a lot of sculpted detail to work with.

But what surprised me the most was the lovely gift that came with her, a very well made brown dress with lace straps. Thank you so much, Raccoondoll!

These are just quick morning pictures with bad lighting, but her features are still visible, I hope. As usual, blank shots frontal view and side view.

Now I just have to come up with a new name for her, or I might confuse her with Racoon Rosie (Queenie).

I really look forward to paint her.
