Just two more nights.. Do you remember the anticipation when you were little? The scent of a real tree, the freshly baked cookies? I do. Not much left of the anticipation, I just enjoy a few days off. And I actually made cookies today, our traditional family recipe. Now everything smells like honey and clove.

This year’s Christmas girl is Karla. Now she’s full of golden glitter…

Mistakes to fashion

Has it ever happened to you that you cut the same pattern piece twice, I mean without flipping it over for the right or left side? Of course you can just make a second shirt with the same pattern. Or you can use your single “useless” piece and mix it with a different fabric to make it a bit more interesting.

The shirt Karla wears in the first pictures is a result of a mistake. It was the first of several shirts I made in this style, the ones I made after this were pattern-mixed on purpose.

I do have a lot of fabric, but people who follow my blog will have seen some of the fabrics used for several garments. I thought this was just nice to have a bit of variation. Karla seems to think so, too.

The second fabric already looks like this. I would have liked the shoulder triangles to end below the boobs, but they are not big enough. And this way the brightest triangle ends just at the waist, so I am happy with it.

Karla’s shades of grey

Not 50, just two or three. I made this dress a while ago, but I think I never took pictures of it. Karla wanted to wear it, even if it’s not her usual style. She made it her own with a scarf and picked a grey bag to go with it.

Spoilt for choice

I have made lots of bags… and there will probably be even more.

But like with all props, there’s the question how to store them. I know that if I put them in a box I will probably forget what I have and never use them. So I made a bag-rack. Or a purse-tree.

It’s just a round dowel with a couple of drilled holes and some wooden skewers. If I really make a bag for every girl (and guy), I will probably just hang them on their doll stands and use the rack for scarfs. But for now I just like to look at this bag-rack and my girls are absolutely spoilt for choice.

Ludivine already has a favorite, but since Dandelion snatched the bag that was intended for Karla, Karla has to pick a new one. I hope you don’t get bored with all the baggy posts :D.

Silent night

This year has been difficult. And Christmas will be different for many of us.

I hope you all can enjoy Christmas with your loved ones.

Rag-time

More rags :). Not really rags, but asymmetrical tea dyed clothes with open hems. Karla wears them so well that I couldn’t resist to make just another post showing off her new stuff. The first combination are separate pieces worn in layers, the belt was a quickly made addition. I am not sure about it, I think I like the version with the necklace better.

The dress is a knit top with a skirt of different fabrics in layers. Unfortunately the panty hose kind of rolled down and made a little bulge at the waist, I didn’t notice until I saw the picture.

The last one is a combination of a tie dyed pink shirt with a piece of lace at the neckline and a layered skirt.

Lucky fall and new clothes

Do you know that moment of shock, the rush of heat in fear of damage when a doll falls and you are not quick enough to catch them? Karla fell today, face down on my shoe. Wen I picked her up I saw she had a black smudge on her nose and eyebrow. I really felt like crying. To my relief the smudge came off with a cotton ball, warm water and dish detergent. The tip of her nose is a tiny bit shiny now, but it could have been much worse. The last picture was taken after the fall, and it’s hardly noticeably.

But first something completely different: New dolls mean new clothes. And since all my dolls have their own clothes I like to store them separately. Some stuff like panty hoses, shoes and shawls are shared, but most of the clothes belong to one doll only.

And I found the ideal storage boxes. They are made to store paper or documents, and they are a little larger than a sheet of paper. It’s very sturdy cardboard, they have a lid and you can store them either upright like books or on top of each other. They are usually on offer once or twice a year at Aldi, together with cardboard magazine holders. I love these boxes. They are large enough to store clothes for one doll, but they don’t take up that much space. And it’s easier to find items if they are not in a big box at the bottom of the pile. I don’t care much for the designs, but they look ok.

But now to the new clothes. I made a panty hose for Karla, and she has a new vest. It’s made from a fabric that’s really annoying when you have dry hands. Mine are really rough from all the disinfectant I have to use at work. The calluses caught on tiny elastic threads every time I touched it. Her new boots from He-meife arrived a while ago, and I made some fun stripy leg warmers to cover the laces. They are always far too long, but I rather hide them than cut them.

New clothes for Karla

I have finished some more clothes for Karla. Unfortunately the weather has been so gloomy and wet that I didn’t have enough time to take pictures of all of them, and those I did take are not the best. My photographic skills are just not good enough to work with low autumn sun.

I imagined Karla with a slightly different style, but since I first put her in rags I knew this was her thing- or at least something she likes. Rags meaning asymmetric Boho style clothes that are not ironed and without finished hems. I really had to hold myself back from cleaning them up, but the style works best with fabric that looks torn or at least a bit messy. But the jacket with embroidery at least is hemmed, and the pictures with her whole dress turned out too dark, so expect lose threads next time 🙂

And I made some vests to go with the dresses / skirts, but I only managed to take pictures of the fringed leather vest before it started to rain again.

It’s not the best time of year to take pictures, when I come home it’s almost dark, and when it’s a rainy Sunday I have to go without a post for the week. But I was lucky it’s a Sunday and we had an hour of late afternoon sun today, so here you go.

People who meet Dandelion and Karla Dante would never guess they are sisters. Half sisters, to be precise, they don’t have the same father. Propably the reason why they look so different. It’s always just been their mom and them, their biological fathers have not been in the picture long enough to be remembered. Karla is five years older, and she took care of her little sister right from the start.

Karla and Dandelion grew up in a trailer park on the outskirts of a small town with a lot of textile industry. It was a nice trailer park, most neighbors were retirees who took pride in tending their little gardens or improving their homes with all sorts of DIY handicraft activities. Karla and Dandelion’s mom worked long hours at a clothing factory, and the two girls were always welcome to a meal and a chat in the neighborhood. They remember a lot of kindness, laughter and a friendly community.

Their mom used to bring home remnants and clothes that didn’t pass quality control, and the two girls loved to take them apart and make new things from them. Dandelion had the ideas and Karla knew how to make them, or whom to ask and where to get stuff. It has always been that way and they enjoyed working together.

They sold clothes, bags, pillow slips and other things they made. And people loved their creations and soon asked for commission work. Later Karla and Dandelion started working at the same factory, and they learned a lot about the industry. But they had a dream since they were girls: They wanted to make a living from selling clothing they liked, unconventional outfits they couldn’t find in the usual stores.

They started out with a stall selling alternative fashion and jewelry. Some of it was self made, some of it bought. They traded at music festivals and traveled the country in their camper van. Two years later they had the funds to create their own clothing line. DANDELIONs GEAR was born.

Dandelion and Karla work very well together. Not only because they get along great, but because they complement each other perfectly. And they are proud of each other’s talents. They use to produce new items during the winter months and start to travel with the beginning of the festival season.

Karla is as resourceful with business matters as Dandelion is creative with her fashion ideas. Karla has some unique talents of her own, and without them they would probably still be working at the factory. If they need something, whether it’s a special kind of button, storage rooms or a supplier of any kind – Karla will find almost everything. It might take a day or two, but she will find what they need, and get a good deal on top of that. The Dante sisters have rules: No sweatshop commissions and no deals if they know of unsupportable working conditions. They might have to pay more, but Karla often finds a way to get both, a good deal and a clear conscience.

They needed quilted bags once, and they just didn’t have the time to make all of them. Karla took the samples and three bags of fabric and made a couple of calls. Two hours later she knew from talking to some very chatty church bazaar organizers that there was a senior trailer park with a quilting club, and the members would love to meet her. 12 old ladies made a wonderful job of it, and they were happy to sell the completely finished bags for less than Karla would have had to pay for having them made in parts by three different manufacturers. Karla and Dandelion still work with the club, and they get homemade pie, very neat work and pay a fair price. If they can sell quilts for them they do it gladly and without commission, and everyone is happy.

It’s Karla’s special talent to find and maintain good working relationships that are sort of unconventional but nonetheless very productive. And she loves old ladies and homemade pie ;).

Karla likes handling the business part, she is good with numbers and planning, organizing and finances. She can be the uncompromising business woman if need be, but she definitively prefers friendly and trusting working relationships.

That’s why she loves to work with her sister. She relies on Dandelion as much as Dandelion on her, they always have been a great team. Sure, they bicker about small things, but they never fight, there’s just no need. And while Karla felt responsible for her little sister when they were kids, she doesn’t feel like there’s a great age difference now.

Karla is as pale as Dandelion is tanned, and she prefers less brightly colored outfits. She loves bohemian style clothing and white, and she likes to wear pink, berry colors and violet. She likes hiking and driving, and she likes the life on the road. But she doesn’t mind settling down for the winter, and she would love to have a cat. Karla keeps a journal, and she likes to listen to audio books while she’s driving. They don’t have much time for reading, and Karla is determined to listen her way through all the classic literature she can get her hands on.

She has an incredible memory for details, and whether it’s an old lady who tells her something about the grandchildren or a supplier with health problems: Karla remembers everything. It’s part of her people skills to show an interest in the person she’s dealing with, and her interest in people is real most of the time.
